Microchipping

Finding ourselves not uncommonly presented with stray dogs and cats, we are always extremely relieved when we can scan them and find a microchip.

It is also a City Council requirement that all cats and dogs must be microchipped when:

  • sold (seller responsibility)
  • given away (responsibility on the person giving away the animal)
  • before reaching the age of 12 weeks

It is not enough, however, that your pet have a microchip implanted. It is very important that you keep your details current and correct with a central registration body.

This is not the same as your pet’s Brisbane City Council Registration!

The benefits of microchipping

A microchip is about the size of a grain of rice.

The barcode contains your contact details which are recorded on the Central Animal Records database for the life of your pet. This means your pet is permanently identified Australia-wide and can be safely returned to you even if there is no collar or Council registration tag.

Once you’ve microchipped your pet, you’ll receive an external tag and a certificate of identification posted to you.

Maintaining microchip information

Whenever you move address, contact your microchip registry to update your details as soon as possible. This will increase the chance of being reunited with your pet should they become lost.

Please contact us if you would like further information or if you would like to ensure the contact details for your pet’s microchip are correct.
